Small poster vintage
travel poster for Ångermanland, a historical province in northern Sweden. Designed by Bengt Linnarsson and issued in 1946, the poster captures the region's natural beauty and industries.
Ångermanland Overview
Location: Situated in northern Sweden, bordering Swedish Lapland, Västerbotten, the Gulf of Bothnia, Medelpad, and Jämtland.
Geography: The landscape is varied, featuring dense forests, rivers, valleys, and a mountainous coast with deep fjords. The High Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rapid land uplift, is a prominent feature of the coastline.
Provincial Symbols: The province's official flower is the wild pansy (Viola tricolor), which is depicted in the foreground of the poster. The provincial animal is the beaver.
History & Culture: Historically, the region was known for log driving (timber transport via river) and iron mining. The name "Ångermanland" comes from the Old Norse word "anger," meaning "deep fjord".
Modern Day: The traditional provinces no longer serve as administrative entities, but remain culturally important. The heart of the province lies within Västernorrland County, with its largest towns being Örnsköldsvik and Härnösand. |
