Synopsis: Set in the Belgian Congo in 1907, the story follows Ellen Burton (Hayward), a widowed nurse who travels to Africa to assist a missionary doctor. She is guided upriver by Lonni Douglas (Mitchum), an animal trapper and fortune hunter who has a secret agenda to search for gold in a hostile tribal region. Their conflicting interests and the dangers of the jungle create the central conflict of the film.
