About Luna Luna
Concept The park was the brainchild of Austrian artist and curator André Heller, who envisioned an open-air "terrain of modern art" that would be accessible and playful for all people, blurring the lines between high art and amusement.
Original Run It operated for one summer in 1987, featuring fully functional rides, games, and installations by more than 30 renowned artists of the era.
Featured Artists The artists, many of whom are represented in the various "moon" illustrations on the poster, included:
Jean-Michel Basquiat (designed a Ferris wheel)
Salvador Dalí (designed a mirrored dome pavilion)
Keith Haring (designed a painted carousel)
David Hockney (designed an enchanted tree pavilion)
Roy Lichtenstein (designed a glass labyrinth pavilion)
Kenny Scharf (designed a chair swing ride)
Resurrection After its initial run, the entire park was packed into 44 shipping containers and was forgotten in storage in Texas for 36 years due to legal disputes. Canadian rapper Drake and his entertainment company, DreamCrew, rediscovered and restored the collection, launching a touring exhibition called Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy in Los Angeles in December 2023.
Current Location The exhibition is currently on display at The Shed in New York City, where it will run until March 16, 2025. While the original rides are for viewing only and cannot be ridden, visitors can explore the installations and enjoy related events. |
