The movie's plot is based on the novel Family Skeleton by Doris Miles Disney. The story follows Stella Bevans (Ann Sheridan), a strong-willed woman who is the sole breadwinner for her lazy family. When her disreputable Uncle Joe accidentally dies during a family picnic, her brothers-in-law bury the body in secret to avoid a murder investigation. The situation quickly escalates into a screwball comedy of errors as the family learns Uncle Joe had a $20,000 life insurance policy with a double indemnity clause and attempts to identify a series of other corpses as him to collect the money.
Victor Mature plays Jeff DeMarco, an insurance claims adjuster from the home office who comes to town to investigate the suspicious claims and ends up falling for Stella. |
