Fenton offers him a job as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, with the condition that he must bring the lynchers in alive for a legal trial rather than seeking personal vengeance. This movie marked Clint Eastwood's return to American Westerns after his success in the Italian "Spaghetti Western" trilogy with Sergio Leone, and was the first production by his own company, The Malpaso Company.
