The Black Panther Newspaper

The Black Panther Newspaper - Mounted (Poster) Newspaper The Black Panther newspaper, Volume X, No. 23, published on Saturday, October 20, 1973. The cover art is a photo collage by Emory Douglas, the Black Panther Party's Minister of Culture. The prominent "Boycott Safeway" message relates to a joint campaign by the Black Panther Party (BPP) and the United Farm Workers (UFW). The Safeway Boycott UFW Alliance: The BPP became one of the most active supporters of the UFW's secondary boycott against Safeway, which was the largest buyer of non-union grapes at the time. BPP's Reasons: Safeway officials consistently refused requests to donate food to the Panthers' Free Breakfast for Children Program, which provided nutritious meals to children in the community. Impact: The alliance between the two groups resulted in picket lines of both UFW workers and BPP members outside Safeway stores, leading to the closure of at least one Safeway location in Oakland due to their efforts. Reciprocal Support: The alliance was a strong, two-way street; when the Panthers were targeted by the FBI, the UFW rallied in their defense.
