Antikbar Royal Quad 40 x 50 transportation poster, Steam ship vintage travel poster for the S.S. Avalon, a British Railways ship that operated a night service between Harwich, England, and the Hook of Holland (Hoek van Holland) in the Netherlands. The artwork for the poster was created by an artist named Johnston.
The S.S. Avalon Ship
Service & Route: The Avalon was the final "classic" cross-channel railway passenger ship built for British Railways and entered service in 1963. Its primary purpose was the Harwich-Hook of Holland night service.
Design & Features: Although a traditional passenger-only vessel, the ship was built to an unusually high standard. It was designed with a dual function, also serving as a part-time cruise ship during the off-peak season, offering short cruises to destinations like Spain, Portugal, and Scandinavia.
Fate: The ship was later converted to a car ferry in 1974 and eventually broken up for scrap in Pakistan in 1981.
The Poster Artwork
The poster itself is a significant piece of vintage transport advertising.
Artist: The artist is identified as Johnston (sometimes referred to as Robert Johnston).
Production: It was produced for British Railways Eastern Region and was printed by Waterlow & Son. |
