Event Details
Event Name: A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In
Date & Location: Saturday, January 14, 1967, at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
Purpose: The free event was a "love-feast" and a protest against a new California law that had banned LSD in 1966. It aimed to unite the diverse "tribes" of Berkeley anti-war activists and non-political Haight-Ashbury hippies in a celebration of peace, love, and higher consciousness.
Attendees: An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people attended, a far greater number than organizers expected. The mass media coverage of the event helped popularize the hippie culture nationwide and served as a prelude to the legendary "Summer of Love". |
