Poster Details
Artist: John Gilroy created nearly all of the Guinness advertisements from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Campaign: The idea for using zoo animals came to Gilroy after he visited a circus and imagined a sea lion balancing a glass of Guinness on its nose. This led to a long-running campaign featuring a zookeeper (a caricature of Gilroy himself) and various mischievous animals, including toucans, ostriches, and seals.
Date: The "Lovely Day for a Guinness" campaign began around 1935.
Theme: The advertisements sought to associate Guinness with strength and humor, and the slogans became popular catchphrases. |
