Grande Fete Aerienne

Grande Fete Aerienne - After (Poster) Attraction 31 x 47, advertising, event, airshow, aviation, aircraft, airplane vintage poster advertises the Grande Fête Aérienne (Great Air Festival) held on July 2, 1939, in Mourmelon-le-Grand, France. The event commemorated the inauguration of a monument to aviation pioneer Henri Farman. Event Details Date: July 2, 1939 Location: Mourmelon-le-Grand, France Purpose: Inauguration of the Henri Farman monument and a celebration of "all French aviation". The event honored the first ever flight from "city to town" made by Farman in 1908 from Bouy to Reims, a distance of 27 kilometers (about 17 miles). Significance: Henri Farman was a record-breaking English-French aviator and aircraft designer who made the world's first observed circuit flight of over a kilometer on January 13, 1908, also in Mourmelon. Artist: The poster was illustrated by Jean Blanchot. The poster features illustrations of two distinct types of aircraft: a vintage biplane and several monoplanes, which include the Farman III biplane and monoplanes such as the Caudron C.714 or similar French fighter aircraft of the era. Biplane (Foreground/Monument): The large, early-aviation style biplane depicted on the monument is a representation of the Farman III, an influential early French aircraft designed by Henri Farman himself in 1909. This type was used for the historic first cross-country flight the event commemorates. Monoplanes (Sky): The faster, more streamlined monoplanes flying in formation in the background appear to be fighter or racing aircraft of the late 1930s, likely to showcase the latest in French aviation at the time of the event in 1939. Similar aircraft from that period include the Caudron C.714 or the Morane-Saulnier M.S.406. The monoplane with a red cowling prominent in the upper left of the poster is possibly a racing variant or prototype, such as a Renault-Caudron racer.
