Poster Details Artist: Terence Cuneo (1907–1996). Cuneo was a prolific painter famous for his railway, military, and equestrian scenes, and was the official artist for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Purpose: The poster was produced for British Railways to show the public the extensive work being carried out to repair the railways after wartime neglect, highlighting that this work happened even at night when unseen by most people. Scene: The artwork depicts a "Permanent Way" gang of railway construction workers using a track-laying train with mechanized lifting equipment to install new rails and sleepers at Wandsworth Common Station in London. Cuneo reportedly made his initial sketches for the painting on-site in the pouring rain.
