30 x 40 quad "Style B" poster for the original 1977 Star Wars film, also known as Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. This highly recognizable artwork was created by the twin brothers Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, known collectively as the Brothers Hildebrandt.
Artwork Details
Artists: Greg and Tim Hildebrandt.
Commission: The twins were commissioned to produce the poster for the British release of the film in 1977, just ten days before the premiere.
Creation: They worked on a very tight 36-hour deadline and had not yet seen the film, working only from a few black-and-white production photos.
Design: The poster uses a similar layout to the initial "Style A" poster by Tom Jung, depicting Luke Skywalker in a heroic pose with a shining lightsaber, Princess Leia with a blaster, and a large, ghostly Darth Vader helmet in the background.
Usage: The studio executives considered the initial "Style A" poster by Jung to be "too dark," so the Hildebrandt version was quickly created and distributed. It was primarily used for British cinema billboards and became one of their best-known works. However, the studio later commissioned a different, more realistic poster by Tom Chantrell for wider use. |
