Grateful Dead # 1

Grateful Dead # 1 - After (Poster) Concert poster for the Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle performing at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco on November 4th and 5th, 1966. The poster, part of the Family Dog (FD) series and known as "FD-33", was designed by the notable psychedelic artists Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse. Poster Details Bands: The Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle. Venue: The Avalon Ballroom (located at Sutter at Van Ness, San Francisco). Dates: Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th, 1966. Presented By: The Family Dog, a production company founded by Chet Helms that promoted concerts during the 1960s. Artists: Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse, a legendary design team known for blending Art Nouveau aesthetics with psychedelic graphics. Design Inspiration: The central image of the skeleton surrounded by roses was adapted from an illustration found in an old book of poems called The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. This artwork later became an iconic symbol used on the cover of the Grateful Dead's 1971 album, often called Skull & Roses. Printers: The original first printings were typically printed just before the concerts. Later printings, such as third prints, often feature a small number like "FD-33-3" in the bottom right corner.
