U.S. Navy chart that outlines various communication codes used at sea, including signal flags, phonetic alphabets, Morse code, and semaphore. The poster was prepared by All Hands magazine for the Bureau of Naval Personnel.
Chart Details
International Alphabet Flags: Features 26 square flags, each paired with its corresponding phonetic alphabet word (e.g., "Alpha," "Bravo") and its single-letter Morse code and semaphore signal. When flown individually, these flags also have specific international meanings (e.g., "Alpha" means "I have a diver down; keep clear").
Naval Numeral Flags & Pennants: Displays 10 distinct numeral flags (0-9) and pennants, along with their phonetic names and Morse code representations.
Naval Special Flags & Pennants: Illustrates specific flags and pennants used for tactical maneuvering and general communication within the Navy, such as "Corpen" (turning together), "Emergency," "Interrogative," and "Negative". The bottom of the poster shows the flags used to spell out the phrase "JOIN THE NAVY".
This type of reference board was commonly posted on the signal bridge of U.S. Navy vessels to help signalmen sharpen their skills. |
