Talking Heads

Talking Heads - Mounted (Poster) Half sheet promotional poster for the Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light. The artwork for the album, designed by band members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz with graphic designer Tibor Kalman and the help of MIT computer labs, is considered one of the first computer-generated record covers in history. Album and Artwork Details Album: Remain in Light (Fourth studio album) Release Date: October 8, 1980 Production: Produced by long-time collaborator Brian Eno Artwork Concept: Conceived by Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz Graphic Design: Executed by Tibor Kalman and his company M&Co., utilizing computers from the MIT Architecture Machine Group to create the unique pixelated effect on the faces. Artwork Details: The faces of the band members are obscured by red blocks, an idea inspired by Weymouth's passion for masks and a thematic element suggesting the "obliteration of identity". The red warplanes (specifically Grumman Avenger planes) flying over mountains were originally intended for the front cover but were moved to the back cover of the album sleeve. They were included as a tribute to Weymouth's father, a US Navy Admiral. The bold, sans-serif band logo features inverted "A"s, a design choice by Kalman to add to the abstract and progressive style. The poster itself is a vintage, original Sire Records promotional item from 1980, not meant for general sale at the time, as indicated by the text "ONLY NOT FOR SALE" at the bottom right.
