The Sure Thing

The Sure Thing - Mounted (Poster) Quad movie poster for The Sure Thing, a 1985 American romantic comedy road film. Directed by Rob Reiner in his second directorial effort, the film stars John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga. Movie Summary The story follows two college students, Walter "Gib" Gibson (John Cusack) and Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga), who are complete opposites attending the same New England university. Gib is a "beer-guzzling slob," while Alison is a "buttoned-up," studious overachiever. The plot kicks off when: Gib travels to California for Christmas break after his friend Lance (Anthony Edwards) promises him a "sure thing"—a beautiful woman who "doesn't take much to woo". Alison is also headed to Los Angeles to visit her "safe," long-distance boyfriend. The two end up carpooling across the country, enduring a "road trip from hell" that includes being stranded and hitchhiking. Despite their initial mutual dislike, they eventually develop a genuine romantic connection. Key Cast and Crew Director: Rob Reiner Walter "Gib" Gibson: John Cusack (in his first major starring role) Alison Bradbury: Daphne Zuniga "The Sure Thing": Nicollette Sheridan Lance: Anthony Edwards Gary Cooper: Tim Robbins Producers: Henry Winkler, Roger Birnbaum, and Andrew Scheinman The film is frequently compared to a modern version of the 1934 classic It Happened One Night. Notably, John Cusack was only 16 or 17 years old during filming and had to seek legal emancipation to work on location.
