Hasting & St. Leonard

Hasting & St. Leonard - Mounted (Poster) One sheet original vintage travel poster for the South Coast towns of Hastings & St Leonards in Sussex, England. Poster Details Artist: The stunning artwork was created by the British painter Elijah Albert Cox (1876–1955), who signed the piece as E.A. Cox. Date: It was produced in the early 1920s (circa 1922). Issuer: The poster was issued by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) just before it was amalgamated into the Southern Railway. Subject Matter: The illustration uses the motif of the Norman Conquest of 1066, depicting a Norman soldier (often associated with William the Conqueror) holding a shield with a red lion, amidst a shower of arrows. This references the historical landing of William the Conqueror in this part of the coast. Background: The background features a stylized view of the Hastings coastline and castle hill.
