Artistic Analysis
The central imagery features a muse of Scripture seated on a Corinthian capital, set against a rising sun. At her feet, a child holds a portrait of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, surrounded by symbols of the arts: a painter's palette, a lyre, and a sculpture of a lion.
Eugène Ogé began his career as an apprentice for the renowned Parisian printer Charles Verneau, who printed this specific work. Ogé's style was heavily influenced by Jules Chéret, often featuring opulent women and vibrant, dynamic compositions typical of the Belle Époque. |
