Historical Context
Tom Sawyer Island opened at Disneyland in 1956 and holds the unique distinction of being the only attraction personally designed by Walt Disney. Walt was a huge fan of Mark Twain's work and spent hours reimagining the island's layout to include the coves, inlets, and structures seen today.
While the Disneyland version remains a staple, the Magic Kingdom (Florida) version was permanently closed in July 2025 to make way for a new expansion themed to Pixar's Cars franchise. |
