One sheet
British propaganda poster from World War II, titled "War Savings Are Warships".
Poster Details
Artist: It was designed by Norman Wilkinson (1878–1971), a notable British marine artist and illustrator who famously invented "Dazzle Camouflage" during World War I.
Date: Issued around 1942 by the National War Savings Committee.
Purpose: The poster was part of a "Home Front" campaign to encourage British citizens to buy war savings bonds. The message was literal for the time: public financial contributions directly funded the construction of the Royal Navy's fleet.
Imagery: The artwork depicts four British battleships at sea, flying signal flags and White Ensigns, with thick plumes of dark smoke pouring from their funnels. |
