French 1 panel poster is for Martin Scorsese’s 1995 epic crime film
Casino, which is closely based on the non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi. The story is inspired by the real-life activities of the Chicago Mob in Las Vegas during the 1970s and 1980s.
Real-Life Inspirations
The film’s primary characters are fictionalized versions of real people:
Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro): Based on Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, a gambling expert who managed several major casinos, including the Stardust and Fremont, for the Chicago Outfit without a valid gaming license.
Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci): Inspired by Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro, a ruthless mob enforcer sent to Las Vegas to protect the mob's interests.
Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone): Based on Geri McGee, a former showgirl and socialite who was married to Rosenthal.
The Tangiers Casino: A fictionalized version of the Stardust Resort and Casino, though Rosenthal also oversaw the Fremont, Marina, and Hacienda.
What Happened to Them?
While the movie dramatizes certain events, it remains largely accurate to their actual fates:
Frank Rosenthal: He survived a car bombing in 1982, much like in the film’s opening. He was eventually banned from Nevada casinos and moved to Florida, where he died of a heart attack in 2008.
Tony Spilotro: His real-life end was just as brutal as depicted. In 1986, he and his brother Michael were beaten to death and buried in an Indiana cornfield.
Geri McGee: She died of an accidental drug overdose in a Los Angeles motel in 1982, shortly after her divorce from Rosenthal. |
