Rhodesia and Nyasaland Rhodes Graves

Rhodesia and Nyasaland Rhodes Graves - Mounted (Poster) original vintage travel poster from the 1950s titled "Rhodesia and Nyasaland - Rhodes Grave Matopos". The artwork depicts the grave of Cecil John Rhodes, located at the summit of a granite hill known as Malindidzimu (or "World's View") in Matobo National Park, Zimbabwe. Historical and Geographic Context The Poster: This authentic vintage piece was issued during the time of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, a colonial federation that existed from 1953 to 1963. It consisted of three territories: Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), and Nyasaland (now Malawi). The Site: The grave is situated in the Matobo Hills (also called Matopos) near Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The site is part of the Matobo National Park, known for its unique balancing granite boulders. Burial History: Cecil John Rhodes died in Muizenberg, Cape Town, on March 26, 1902. Per his request, his body was transported and buried at this specific granite hilltop, which he called "World's View". Cultural Significance: While a major tourist attraction, the site is also deeply significant to indigenous groups. The Matobo Hills are considered sacred, and Malindidzimu is traditionally a shrine to the Shona deity Mwari
