St. Jerome Praying

After Fine art by Rembrandt St. Jerome Praying: Arched, an etching by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. It is dated to 1632. The print depicts Saint Jerome kneeling in prayer inside a rocky grotto, with his hands clasped and his head raised towards a source of light. Saint Jerome is a patron saint of librarians and students, and is known for translating the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. In this etching, the subject is portrayed as a penitent hermit in the wilderness, which was a common subject in art, even in Protestant cultures. Rembrandt's use of light and shadow, a hallmark of his work, is evident in the composition, which creates a dramatic and intimate scene.
