Concert poster designated BG-5 in the Bill Graham series, was designed by renowned artist Wes Wilson. It advertised a dance concert at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium on May 6 and 7, 1966, featuring Jefferson Airplane and The Jaywalkers. Design and Context: Artistic Style: The poster showcases Wilson's pioneering psychedelic style, characterized by vibrant orange and green colors and swirling, interlocking typography that fills the space. Visual Elements: The lettering is amorphous and wavy, fitting within a circular shape that resembles a human head or a set of lips. Significance: At this time, Wes Wilson was experimenting with lettering styles inspired by the Vienna Secessionist movement. The concert occurred just months before Jefferson Airplane released their debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. Collector's Information, Authenticity can be determined by specific printing details: First Printing: Printed on vellum stock, approximately 14" x 20", and features the Union logo #72 in the lower right corner. Second Printing: Produced in 1967 on uncoated index stock, omits the union logo, and is slightly smaller (approximately 13 11/16" x 20"). Rarity: Original high-grade BG-5 posters are considered scarce. Modern reprints, including a 2021 run by Wolfgang's, exist but are clearly marked in the margins. |
