Radio Bird Man

Radio Bird Man - After (Poster) One sheet original 1977 promotional poster for the Australian punk rock band Radio Birdman and their "Aural Rape" tour. This tour promoted their landmark debut album, Radios Appear, released that same year. Poster Details Event: "Aural Rape" Tour/77, specifically listing dates for shows at Largs Pier Hotel (Sept 15, 25), Marrayatville Hotel (Sept 16, 17, 21, 23, 24), and the Tivoli Hotel (Sept 20). Promotion: Highlights that records and tapes were "Available thru WEA," the label that gave the album a wider release after its initial independent run on Trafalgar Records. Designer: The band's bassist, Warwick Gilbert, who was a professional graphic artist, designed many of the band's distinctive posters and refined their visual style. The Band & Iconography Radio Birdman formed in Sydney in 1974 and is considered one of Australia's most influential early punk bands. The Name: Taken from a "mondegreen" (a misheard lyric) of the phrase "Radio burning" in the song "1970" by The Stooges. The Logo: Centered on the poster, the iconic symbol was created by lead guitarist Deniz Tek. It was originally based on a clock face with hands forming an eye shape, or a stylized flying saucer. Legacy: Known for a high-energy "blitzkrieg" sound influenced by Detroit bands like the MC5 and The Stooges, they paved the way for future Australian indie and rock acts like the Hoodoo Gurus and Midnight Oil.
