It was created between 1943 and 1947 as a pochoir (stencil print) for his limited-edition book, Jazz, which was published in 1947. The book is known for its vibrant colors and cut-out designs, which are characteristic of Matisse's late career. The image depicts a white elephant in the center, surrounded by abstract black shapes that resemble foliage or figures and two red birds in flight. |
