Fine Art Henri Matisse's work,
La Nageuse dans l'aquarium (The Swimmer in the Tank), is a print from his 1947 artist's book, Jazz. The image was created using his signature paper cut-out technique, which he developed in the final years of his life.
About the Artwork
Artist: Henri Matisse (1869-1954), a French artist known for his use of color and fluid forms.
Technique: The original was made by cutting shapes out of paper that had been painted with gouache. The prints in the Jazz portfolio were made using a stencil technique called pochoir to reproduce the colors and forms with fidelity.
The Jazz Book: The portfolio is a limited-edition artist's book containing 20 plates with abstract compositions inspired by the circus, mythology, and his travels. The title Jazz was suggested by the publisher, Tériade, because the cut-outs embodied an improvisational spirit similar to jazz music.
Acquisition: The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco acquired the 1947 pochoir print. A later lithograph edition was authorized in 1983 by the Matisse Estate and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). |
