About the Artwork
West Coast Crash is part of Almaraz's iconic series of car crash paintings. These works capture the urban landscape of Los Angeles with explosive colors and textures, often depicting fiery collisions on Southern California freeways. The crash series is seen as a commentary on the "clash of cultures" and the car as a symbol of American life, which Almaraz portrays as being "gone up in flames". The paintings also explore the human fascination with scenes of catastrophe and violence. The work in the image is a version created in 1982, though other versions of the car crash theme exist, including a silkscreen from 1990. |
