| Poster was de-mounted by soaking face-down in water between sheets of Mylar. Canvas backing was removed easily by hand. The paper substrate, however, had bonded very strongly to the poster and proved difficult to remove. The extraction of this paper resulted in some structural damage to the poster in the form of minor delaminations. These delaminations are located predominately in the lower section of the poster where there are indications of previous mold growth. De-mounting revealed that the poster had several tears and areas of paper loss prior to its previous linen backing; there are multiple paper patches and breaks throughout the poster.All patches and original poster paper were retained in the current mounting process.
Gelatin was applied to the front and back of the piece and adhered, face down to a museum board - this technique "double facing" gives strength and flexibility back to the paper structure. Once completely dry, the poster was removed from the board, rinsed of excess gelatin and mounted on linen and allowed to cure again overnight. |
