This was another incredible restoration we did back in 2012. It's an incredibly rare piece of Americana that showcases our skills in airbrushing, detail, prep and conservation. The result was truly impressive!
This H.S. Crocker Co. Litho S.F. vintage lithographed advertising sign for "Days of '49" Whiskey.
Produced by the H. S. Crocker Co., this piece of Americana was used to promote a brand of whiskey by evoking the rugged, romanticized spirit of the California Gold Rush era.
Key Details of the Print
Artist/Printer: Created by the H. S. Crocker Co., a well-known printing firm that specialized in lithography and commercial advertising.
Subject Matter: The artwork depicts a bustling scene on the American frontier, featuring cowboys on horseback encountering Native Americans on a vast plain, with a wagon train and covered wagons visible in the background.
Distributor Markings: Original versions often bear the stamp of Myer Feld, Mitchell & Co., who were distributors based in San Francisco.
Significance: The title "Days of '49" refers to the year 1849, the height of the California Gold Rush. While the brand itself was commercial, it leveraged the popular "Manifest Destiny" and "Old West" themes common in late 19th and early 20th-century American marketing.
Physical Characteristics
Original framed versions of this sign are substantial, often measuring approximately 43" x 30" (framed) or 19.5" x 29.5" for the lithograph itself. These signs were typically printed on paper and mounted in ornate wood and gesso frames for display in saloons or retail locations.
