Description & Context

The print is famous for its dramatic, high-contrast use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), a signature style of Kloss's New Mexico landscapes. It depicts a nighttime ritual of the Hermanos de la Fraternidad Pía de los Penitentes (a lay Catholic fraternity) in Northern New Mexico. The scene captures figures silhouetted against intense beams of light emanating from a morada (meeting house) and a bonfire, with a massive plume of smoke rising dramatically into the dark sky against the mountain backdrop.
Fine impressions of this print can be found in major museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Philbrook Museum of Art.
