Nice
One sheet iconic original 1965 tourism and exhibition poster designed for the city of Nice on the French Riviera.

Artwork Details

• Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954).
• Title: La Danseuse Créole (The Creole Dancer).
• Original Creation: The artwork was initially created by Matisse in 1950 using his famous gouaches découpées (painted paper cut-out collage) technique.
• Inspiration: The composition was inspired by the celebrated American dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham, who visited and danced in Matisse's studio. He created this dynamic piece in a single day from the sketches he made during her performance.
• The Poster's History: Matisse gifted the original cut-out piece to the Musée Matisse in Nice in 1953. In 1965, the French Tourism Board commissioned the renowned printmakers Mourlot Frères in Paris to turn this artwork into an official lithographic travel poster promoting Nice and the Côte d'Azur.
