Men Of Valor
One sheet This is an authentic World War II Canadian propaganda poster titled "MEN of VALOR — They fight for you." Created in 1942 by artist Hubert Rogers for the Wartime Information Board in Ottawa, the artwork honors individual acts of bravery rather than using abstract slogans.

Historical Background

The image depicts a dramatic, real-life naval action that took place during the Battle of the Caribbean. On August 28, 1942, the Flower-class corvette HMCS Oakville (K178) rammed, shelled, and disabled the seasoned German submarine U-94 off the coast of Haiti.
As the submarine was sinking, a two-man boarding party leaped across onto the deck of the U-boat:
• Sub-Lieutenant Harold "Hal" Lawrence
• Stoker Petty Officer Arthur "Art" Powell
Armed only with pistols and famously wearing little more than their undergarments after an accidental gun blast had earlier thrown them overboard, the two men successfully subdued the remaining German crew, took prisoners, and gathered intel right before the U-boat plunged into the sea.
