Terres De Grand Feu
Fine art print s Terres de Grand Feu ("Lands of Great Fire"), an original color lithograph created in 1956 by the renowned Spanish Surrealist artist Joan Miró.
Context & Meaning
• The Collaboration: The artwork was specifically designed to announce and celebrate a major exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris. The exhibition showcased a collection of ceramic sculptures created between 1950 and 1956 through a close collaboration between Miró and the legendary Catalan ceramicist Josep Llorens Artigas.
• The Kiln Fire: The title Terres de grand feu translates literally to "earths of great fire". It pays direct homage to the intense heat and high-temperature stoneware processes needed to fire the ceramic pieces inside the kiln.
• Visual Motifs: The print exemplifies Miró’s iconic abstract vocabulary. The black jagged triangles spanning along the bottom resemble stylized flames from the kiln, while his signature floating stars, crescent moons, and vibrant primary-color zones frame his loose, hand-drawn typography.
