Nord Express
One sheet iconic Nord Express advertising poster created in 1927 by the influential French graphic designer A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Mouron Cassandre).
Artwork Overview
• Artist: A.M. Cassandre (1901–1968)
• Year: 1927
• Art Movement: Art Deco (strongly influenced by Cubism, Purism, and Machine Age aesthetics)
• Client: Designed for the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits and the Chemin de Fer du Nord to promote luxury train travel across Europe.
Visual & Design Elements
Instead of showing picturesque landscapes or wealthy travelers standard in travel posters of that era, Cassandre prioritized the machine itself as a symbol of speed and interconnected technology.
• Perspective: The composition uses a dramatic, low, track-level viewpoint that exaggerates the towering scale and raw power of the locomotive.
• Geometry: The locomotive's forms are heavily stylized, turning mechanical parts into clean geometric shapes like ellipses, cylinders, and sharp diagonal vectors.
• Movement: A delicate, wispy line of steam cuts through the title, while a converging sheaf of telegraph lines on the right races toward a distant vanishing point to convey immense velocity.
• Typography: The text is integrated seamlessly into the design. The large, blocky title balances the composition, while the bottom listing details the trans-European route: London, Paris, Brussels, Liège, Berlin, Warsaw, and Riga.
