Back To The Future
One sheet theatrical movie poster for the 1985 classic sci-fi film Back to the Future. The poster features the iconic image of Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly stepping out of the DeLorean time machine, lifting his sunglasses to check his watch, with lines of fire blazing across the pavement behind him.It lists the key creative team:Director: Robert Zemeckis Presenter: Steven Spielberg Starring: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Crispin Glover Music: Alan Silvestri.

Before settling on the definitive "Marty checking his watch" poster design, Drew Struzan spent weeks exploring completely different ideas for Universal Studios. The studio initially wasn't sure how to market a movie about time travel, so they had him pitch several varied visual directions. Here are some of the most notable alternative poster concepts Struzan hand-painted during development:The Giant Clock FaceOne of his earliest concepts leaned heavily into the time-travel element, featuring a massive pocket watch or clock face. Marty was positioned directly inside or on top of the clock, looking bewildered or desperate while clutching the clock hands as if trying to stop time from running out.The Doc and Marty DuoThe studio initially considered featuring both main characters on the front teaser poster. Struzan painted a concept showing Marty McFly and Doc Brown standing together next to the DeLorean. Marty looked anxious while Doc Brown was pointing excitedly toward the sky, showcasing their dynamic early on.Marty Trapped in the Clock Another surreal variation featured a close-up of Marty’s face literally trapped inside a clock, with his hands pressed against the glass as the gears turned behind him. It aimed for a thriller aesthetic, emphasizing the threat of being stuck in the wrong era forever. The Disappearing Hand Playing on the plot point where Marty begins to fade from existence, one experimental design featured a giant, spectral hand in the center of the poster that was partially transparent, with lightning cracking around a wristwatch.
