Halfsheet British World War II recruitment and propaganda poster titled "National Service Wants YOU!". Poster Details & History Origin: It was printed for His Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) by Fosh & Cross Ltd. in London.Purpose: The design was used during the second half of the war to recruit young citizens into compulsory military or industrial war work, known as National Service.Design Significance: This poster relies heavily on the direct address technique, featuring a giant, dramatic clenched fist with a finger pointing directly forward at the viewer. This artistic trope was heavily inspired by Alfred Leete's iconic 1914 World War I design featuring Lord Kitchener, which subsequently inspired the American Uncle Sam "I Want YOU" posters.
