Melourne Olympic Games
Small official poster for the 1956 Summer Olympic Games held in Melbourne, Australia.Key Facts & Design History The Designer: It was designed by Richard Beck, an English-born industrial designer and graphic artist who had relocated to Melbourne. His design won an official competition organized by the Melbourne Olympic Committee in 1954.The Concept: The central graphic element is styled as a three-leaf invitation card dynamicly half-folded against a rich blue background. The front fold showcases the iconic five Olympic rings, while the lower fold displays the official Coat of Arms of the City of Melbourne.Stylistic Shift: This poster marked a monumental departure from traditional Olympic poster history. Prior Summer Games posters heavily favored illustrative representations of classical athletic human bodies. Beck's design completely stripped away human figures in favor of clean, corporate, geometric modernism to frame Australia as a forward-looking, modern destination.Distribution: Roughly 70,000 copies of the poster were printed by Containers Limited in Melbourne across two standard sizes (large and small formats) to be distributed globally via airlines, travel bureaus, and international Olympic committees.Other Formats: Before its formal release as a promotional poster, the exact artwork was first issued on an official Australian postage stamp in 1954
