Gorgo
Australian 3 sheet original promotional poster for Gorgo, a classic 1961 British monster film.Directed by Eugène Lourié, Gorgo is famous in cinematic history as the UK's answer to Japan's Godzilla. The plot follows a group of salvage hunters who capture a 65-foot prehistoric sea beast off the coast of Ireland and sell it to a London circus for public exhibition. However, they soon realize the terrifying truth: the captured creature is just a baby, and its colossal 200-foot-tall mother is coming to smash London to rescue her offspring.Essential Facts About the Film The Mother-Child Twist: Unlike most "giant monster" movies of the era where the beast is killed, Gorgo is famously unique for its remarkably tender ending. Because of director Lourié's daughter crying when the monster died in his previous film (The Giant Behemoth), he decided to let both monsters live and waddle safely back to the sea after flattening London landmarks.Special Effects: The film was considered for an Academy Award for Special Effects in 1961. The monster was brought to life via "suitmation" (an actor in a rubber suit) and meticulously crafted weathering miniature models. To make the monsters look truly titanic, filmmakers used expensive slow-motion cameras to capture the scale of destruction.Cinematography Legend: The gorgeous Technicolor visuals were captured by Freddie Young, who would later win Academy Awards for his cinematography on legendary films like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.Cult Legacy: The movie is highly regarded by B-movie aficionados and was famously featured in a popular episode of the cult comedy show Mystery Science Theater 3000.
