The Vicious Circle
Cats, humorous illustration titled "The Vicious Circle" (or alternately known as "Onwards and Upwards") by the celebrated British satirical cartoonist and illustrator Ronald Searle. This particular illustration was published in his 1968 book The Square Egg & The Vicious Circle.Composition AnalysisThe Feline Crowd: The drawing features a dense, chaotic pack of Searle's characteristically round, anxious, and disgruntled cats. They are huddled together, climbing over one another to form a steep slope.The Bird: In the upper right corner, a wild-eyed, chaotic-looking bird flies above the crowd, leaving a trailing burst of feathers and dots in its wake.Artistic Style: The artwork is composed using Searle's signature rapid, jagged ink lines, giving the entire group of animals a highly expressive, neurotic, and whimsical personality.Signature: The lower right corner bears the artist's original pencil signature and date, reading "Ronald Searle '67".
