Artist: Designed by Ilmari Sysimetsä in 1938 following a design competition.
Subject: The central figure represents a sculpture of the famous Finnish long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi.
Historical Context: These 1940 Games were ultimately cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II.
Legacy: When Helsinki eventually hosted the Summer Olympics in 1952, this same design was reused; only the dates and the Olympiad number were updated for the official 1952 poster.
