Director It was directed by Karl Freund, who was also the cinematographer for the film Dracula (1931).
Studio The movie was released by Universal Studios as part of their classic "Universal Monsters" franchise.
Inspiration The story was inspired by the public fascination surrounding the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb and the subsequent "Curse of the Pharaohs" news stories.
Plot The film follows an ancient Egyptian high priest named Imhotep, played by Boris Karloff, who is inadvertently resurrected by an archaeological expedition. Disguised in modern Egypt, he searches for his lost love, whom he believes has been reincarnated into a young British-Egyptian woman, Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann).

The poster famously bills the lead actor simply as "KARLOFF THE UNCANNY," a testament to his rapid rise to fame after his role in Frankenstein the previous year. Original copies of this poster are extremely rare, with some having been put up for auction with estimated values exceeding one million dollars.
