London Olympics
Halfsheet
official poster for the 1948 London Summer Olympic Games. Designed by Walter Herz, the poster combines classical and British imagery to symbolize the return of the games after a twelve-year hiatus due to World War II.
Poster Details

Design Elements: The design features an ancient Greek statue of a discus thrower, known as the Discobolus of Myron, in the foreground. Superimposed over a view of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben in London, it merges classical athletic ideals with the host city's iconic landmarks.
Symbolism: The hands of Big Ben are set to 4:00 p.m., the planned time for the opening ceremony of the Games. The five colored Olympic rings are displayed prominently at the bottom of the image, along with the dates of the competition: 29 July to 14 August 1948.
Production: Approximately 100,000 copies of the official poster were printed and distributed free of charge in different sizes across Great Britain.
