Overview
Title: Coming to America
Release Date: June 29, 1988
Director: John Landis
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, and Shari Headley
Plot Summary
The story follows Akeem Joffer, the wealthy crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda. On his 21st birthday, he is expected to enter an arranged marriage with a woman he has never met, which he rejects.
Determined to find a wife who will love him for himself, not his royal status, Akeem travels to the United States with his loyal friend and assistant, Semmi. They disguise themselves as poor foreign students and move into a run-down apartment in Queens, New York. Akeem gets a job at a fast-food restaurant called McDowell's, where he meets and falls in love with Lisa McDowell, the owner's daughter. The film is a romantic comedy exploring cultural clashes as Akeem tries to win Lisa's heart while keeping his true identity a secret. American artist and illustrator Drew Struzan.
Drew Struzan's Work
Struzan is highly regarded for his hand-painted style, which defined the look of many blockbuster films in the 1980s and 1990s.
He is the artist behind over 150 movie posters, including those for major franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Harry Potter.
Directors like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas frequently commissioned his work to capture the essence and "soul" of their films in a single image.
The Coming to America Poster
The poster in the image is the final theatrical release design painted by Struzan. Interestingly, his son Christian Struzan later created a separate design for the film's home video release.
Legacy
Drew Struzan is considered one of the greatest movie poster artists of all time, known for his ability to convey a film's mood and themes through traditional artistry in an era increasingly dominated by digital design.
