Fasionwise D H Evans
Antikbar, one sheet vintage
advertising poster for the D.H Evans department store
on Oxford Street, London. The store was a prominent London retailer, but the original name is no longer in use.

D.H Evans The department store was founded by Dan Harries Evans in 1879 on Oxford Street. It was considered one of London's largest drapery establishments by 1888.
Acquisition The business merged with Harrods in 1928, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary. Harrods was later acquired by House of Fraser in 1954.
Rebranding and Closure The Oxford Street store continued to trade under the D.H Evans name until 2001, when it was rebranded as a House of Fraser flagship store. The House of Fraser store at that location closed permanently in January 2022 and the building is being redeveloped for mixed-use, including office space and a gym.
"Fashion-Wise" Campaign The "Fashion-Wise" slogan was part of a poster campaign for D.H. Evans created by graphic designer Arpad Elfer, primarily for London Underground advertisements. The artist who designed the D.H. Evans "Fashion-Wise" poster campaign is
Arpad Elfer.

Arpad Elfer (1910-1999) was a Hungarian graphic designer and creative director at the advertising agency Colman, Prentis and Varley (CPV) in London.
He designed a series of well-known "Wise" posters for D.H. Evans, including "Fashion-wise," "Shopping-wise," "School-wise," and "Holiday-wise," which were notably used as advertisements on the London Underground.
