Plot The story is set in British India during the 1857 Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny). It follows Captain Alan King, a half-British, half-Indian officer who faces intense racial discrimination from his fellow British soldiers. He is tasked with leading the native Khyber Riflemen and must put down a rebellion led by Karram Khan (played by Guy Rolfe), a childhood friend who is now a ruthless rebel leader. The plot also involves a forbidden romance between Captain King and Susan Maitland (Terry Moore), the daughter of his commanding officer, Brigadier General J.R. Maitland (Michael Rennie).
Source Material The film is loosely based on the 1916 novel of the same name by Talbot Mundy, which was also the basis for the 1929 John Ford film The Black Watch.
Filming Location The scenes in the Khyber Pass area were filmed in the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California.
