Stardust Memories
One sheet Stardust Memories
is a 1980 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, who also stars in the film. The film is shot entirely in black and white and is a homage to Federico Fellini's classic film 8½.
Synopsis
The plot follows Sandy Bates (played by Allen), a renowned filmmaker known for his comedic work, who is experiencing a mid-life crisis and artistic block. He is tired of making "funny" movies and desires to create something more meaningful, which puts him at odds with his studio executives and fans who constantly pester him for his "earlier, funnier" films.
Bates attends a weekend film festival retrospective of his work at the Stardust Hotel, where he is plagued by fans, studio demands, and memories of his past and present relationships. He reflects on his love life, including a tumultuous past relationship with the unstable Dorrie (Charlotte Rampling) and his current entanglements with the married Isobel (Marie-Christine Barrault) and the earnest Daisy (Jessica Harper).
The film uses surrealistic elements, including dream sequences and an alien visitation, to explore themes of art, reality, luck, the meaning of life, and the relationship between an artist and their audience.
