The poster was created by the Italian artist Osvaldo Ballerio around the 1920s. It was produced to promote tourism to Ravenna and to showcase the city's historical and artistic significance. The Arian Baptistery was built at the end of the 5th century by the Ostrogothic ruler Theodoric the Great for the Arian community of the city. It is a small brick, octagonal building that, like many of the monuments in Ravenna, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Osvaldo Ballerio (1871–1942) was an Italian poster artist and illustrator who created numerous posters in the early 20th century. The "Ravenna" poster was designed around the 1920s to promote tourism for the Italian State Railways and the national tourism board, ENIT
