Portrait Of Jaqueline
Condition Report

Artist: Pablo Picasso
Title: Portrait of Jacqueline
Date: 1959
Medium: Lithograph on Arches wove paper
Edition: 44/50
Dimensions (sheet): 24 5/16 × 29 ½ in. (61.8 × 74.9 cm), Image size is 20-5/8 x 25 inches.
Signature/Markings: Signed in pencil lower right, numbered 44/50 lower left

Support (Paper):

Arches wove paper, sound and intact.

General sheet tone is good; however, there is light overall discoloration and mat burn along the edges from prior contact with acidic matting.

Paper shows some deformation/cockling at the upper edge in areas of hinging, caused by moisture when water-activated hinges were applied.

Hinges / Mounting:

Currently unframed for examination.

Three active T-hinges along the upper edge.

Two old hinge remnants present at the top left and top right corners (outer margins), consistent with earlier mounting methods.

All hinges show localized stress and minor surface irregularity to the paper where moisture was introduced.

Image Area:

The printed surface is clean, stable, and unfaded.

Ink retains good density and no signs of offsetting, scuffing, or abrasion are present.

No losses, tears, or restorations observed within the image.

Margins:

Top left margin shows mild creasing.

Otherwise margins are generally clean, with only minor rippling associated with hinging and previous mat contact.

Verso:

Paper tone even overall with slight darkening at edges (mat burn visible through verso).

No tears, repairs, or additional markings aside from hinge attachments.

Condition Summary:

This impression of Portrait of Jacqueline is in very good condition overall, with only minor and reversible issues:

Light discoloration/mat burn from acidic matting.

Mild paper deformation from water-activated hinges.

Minor crease in the top left margin.

The sheet is structurally sound, the image is strong, and both signature and edition number are well preserved.

Conservation Recommendations:

Remove non-archival hinges and remnants; replace with Japanese tissue hinges and reversible, conservation-grade adhesive.

Deacidification or light washing treatment could be considered to reduce mat burn and improve paper brightness.

Re-mount using 100% rag, acid-free backing and UV-protective glazing.

The artwork was removed from its frame and examined visually under ambient and raking light. Both recto and verso were inspected without magnification. The work was photographed in and out of its frame, including details of hinges and margins, to document current condition.
