Free South Africa
Poster by Keith Haring, This is a poster titled "Free South Africa" by the artist Keith Haring, created in 1985.
The poster is a political statement against the apartheid system of institutionalized racial segregation in South Africa.
The artwork depicts a large black figure overcoming a smaller white figure. The large black figure represents the black majority population in South Africa, while the smaller white figure, marked with a red cross, symbolizes the white minority that held power and oppressed the majority. The poster illustrates the struggle between the two, with the white figure attempting to maintain control with a chain around the neck of the black figure. The radiating lines around the figures convey the energy and movement of the struggle.
Haring created this artwork to mobilize against apartheid and raise awareness about its injustices. He distributed about 20,000 poster versions of the print in New York City to garner support for the anti-apartheid movement.
